Dean’s Visit to European Educational Institutions for Expanded International Collaboration

From May 7 to May 14, 2023, Dean of RUC School of Arts, Prof. Zhang Chun, and Deputy Dean of RUC School of Arts, Prof. Qi Yue, led the delegation to visit the Florence Academy of Fine Arts(ABAFI) in Italy, the National Academy of Fine Arts, Paris, France, and the Burgundy School of Business(BSB), Dijon, France.

The first destination is the Florence Academy of Fine Arts (ABAFI) where the delegation met and spoke with the dean of Prof. Claudio Rocca. ABAFI is the world's first academy of fine arts, founded in 1339 and officially established in 1562. It is hailed as the mother of the world’s art school, and the head of the world’s four major art academies. During the meeting, the two sides mainly discussed the initiatives of promoting student exchange programs, joint degree programs,and academic visits among scholars. The Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) between the two institutes was signed, considered as the cornerstone of a reciprocal relation built. Then, Dean Rocca showed us the academy’s art studios, research centers, and teaching classrooms. More emphasis is placed on the cooperation of visual arts, hoping to stimulate extensive academic exchanges and artistic practices between the two institutes through co-organizing lectures, workshops, exhibitions, and academic conferences. Consensus is reached to facilitate sustainable relations and build international platform to benefit more students and scholars from both sides.

On the morning of May 11, The delegation headed to the National Academy of Fine Arts, Paris, France, and kicked off the first meeting with the academy’s faculty members. Founded in 1671, the National Academy of Fine Arts, Paris, is one of the four brilliant art academies in the world. Mr. Xu Beihong,an eminent oil painter and art educator, honored as the forerunner of Chinese modern art education,graduated from the academy with his learning experience of western art to be introduced to China, which inspired and led the development and innovation of higher Chinese art education. The initial establishment of RUC School of Arts was named after Mr. Xu Beihong, and his son, Mr. Xu Qingping was the School’s first dean. During the meeting, each side addressed the uniqueness and characteristics of their own art education, and discussed how to foster art and cultural exchange between the two institutes under the impacts of Mr. Xu Beihong. The visit made it possible for the two institutes to deepen mutual recognition and brace up for a robust cooperation to consistently lead China-France humanities and arts exchanges forward.

The trip to Burgundy School of Business(BSB), Dijon, France took place on May 11th. Regarding our collaboration with BSB, a dual master’s degree program in Arts Management has been established with MOU and Articulation Agreement signed. During the meeting, the two sides laid out concrete plan of future cooperation,and specified the ideas of continuously building student exchange program, and experimenting new form of joint degree program. Prof. Zhang Chun stated that RUC School of Arts attaches more importance to the cultivation of international arts managers to respond to the sweeping change of global art industry. In recent years, our art education and cooperation has expanded to get more domestic and international art institutes and enterprises involved, such as Beijing Guardian Art Center,China Arts and Entertainment Group Ltd., Center for International Cultural Communication,and more to jointly build multi-functional platform to serve students’ need for professional enhancement and career development.

On May 12th, at BSB, the academic event “Global Youth multicultural Dialogue Series——Value of Art in Contemporary Society”was successful held by RUC School of Art, BSB, Center for International Cultural Communication, and China-Europe Education Alliance for Humanities and Arts. The academic event convened the scholars and students from China and France to present their academic views with a combination of music performance, and cross-cultural interaction among students from RUC School of Arts and BSB. Supported by  China-Europe Education Alliance for Humanities and Arts (CEEAHA), RUC School of Arts step forward to promote the development of humanities and arts exchange between China and Europe, and make use of academic resources to prompt profound multilateral cultural exchanges across the world.

The academic visit accomplished after pandemic heralds massive progress of reciprocal relationships with three European educational institutes in expanded aspects. For each side, it is an invaluable opportunity to deepen mutual understanding,to share respective thoughts on art education, teaching methodologies, and innovative international cooperation paradigm, which marks profound impacts on the work of international affairs of RUC School of Arts.
